Online Groceries?

So there has been a recent boom with discussions on online retailors for groceries. While this seems like a great idea, I also have my hesitations. Call me Type A or whatever, but I like to be able to touch, smell, and sometimes squeeze my produce to make sure it is ripe but not too ripe. So the idea of having someone else do that for me??? Okay, yeah, I’m type A.

I wanted to take a quick look at some of the non-produce items between two online retailors as I begin to dip my toe into the ever growing pool. You all know that one of my favorite online stores is none other than Amazon so I wanted to see what it’s competition was doing to stay competitive (wow, be jealous of those English skills). I am a member of Thrive Market, which I was able to get for free due to being a student (graduate students count too). While I do shop at Thrive, I was questioning some of the prices and if it was really saving time and/or money. I wanted to compare the exact same item so it was even, but if I couldn’t get that, I labeled below the closest substitute.

Disclaimer: This is NOT a sponsored post and I am not in any way affiliated with Thrive Market other than having been a customer on my own journey to healthier food selections.

So without further delay… Thrive Market versus Amazon. Ready?

Primal Kitchen Avocado Oil Mayo – 12 oz jar
Thrive Market – $7.45
Amazon – $14.28

Calbee Non-GMO Lightly Salted Snapea Crisps Snacks
Thrive Market – $1.45 (3.3 oz bag)
Amazon – $17.99 (6 x 3.3 oz = $2.99/bag)

Mavuno Harvest Organic Dried Jackfruit
Thrive Market – $6.95 (6 oz bag)
Amazon – $26.45 (6 x 2.0 oz = $13.23/bag)

Lundberg Farms Rice Chips – Fiesta Lime
Thrive Market – $2.45 (6 oz bag)
Amazon – $26.62 (24 x 1.5 oz = ~$4.44/bag)

KETTLE & FIRE GRASS-FED BEEF BONE BROTH
Thrive Market – $8.95 (17.6 oz package)
Amazon – $15.95 (17.6 oz package)

ANNIE’S HOMEGROWN ORGANIC MACARONI AND CHEESE
Thrive Market – $2.25 (6 oz box)
Amazon – $36.34 (12 x 6 oz = ~$3.03/box)

Now keep in mind that Amazon’s prices do change frequently AND they offer 2-day shipping to Prime members so that is important to keep in mind. Also, Amazon is well known for their price-matching should the item you bought change in price within a couple of days. On the other hand, Thrive does offer free shipping and sample products (sometimes full size) over a minimum purchase – usually $49 or more. Thrive usually ships within 2 days and ensures their products are well secured/packed (wrapped with bubble wrap, include an ice pack, etc.).

Thrive Market DOES offer a free 30-day trial period and a free grocery item (mine was a jar of coconut oil).

End result? In this case, Thrive Market is the winner. I have purchased items from them previously and have been very happy with their selection, delivery, and packaging. The key to detail far surpasses other online retailers I have worked with in the past.

However, more of than not, Amazon is usually ahead with the pricing and selection – plus you can also grab that iPhone stand or new pop socket with your order from Amazon. Plus with Amazon’s enhanced Amazon Fresh program, Prime members can get groceries delivered within hours for free as long as you live in an Amazon Fresh area.

So inquiring minds want to know… Have you tried Thrive Market or Amazon Fresh? Do you shop for your groceries online? Have you tried pre-ordering and curbside pick-up?

Healthy Home

So one of the steps I have looked at for my health journey is looking at the products I use in my home. Is that air freshener really good for me? Is there a better alternative to clean my furniture? Could there be a better way to organize my pantry items? How can I feel safer in my home and protect my family? I live in an apartment – how could I make improvements to save money every month?

Below are some items and techniques that I added to my home the past few months, have tested, and could not live without! Some were investments, some were quick fixes, but overall they all took my place from an apartment to my home.

Disclaimer: Some of the links below are affiliate links. While this does not impact your experience or cost with the product, if you purchase through my link, I do receive a small percentage. This allows me to continue bringing you original content and testing out new products. Photos are stock from the retailer’s website – they are not mine.

The first place I wanted to look for a healthier alternative is in the laundry. We all know this is one of the areas we neglect – mostly because we never quite seem to get around to the folding part. But after finding out just how bad those dryer sheets are for the skin, and how they actually repel water (which is the opposite of what you want your towels to do), I made the switch to these wool dryer balls. I bought the six-pack for cost effectiveness but also to give me options. I say options because I get to use my essential oils and customize my laundry scent. For example, lavender for my sheets and tangerine for my towels! They remove static and help reduce drying time because they are wool. They are reusable so one order from a year ago is still going!

This one is a double benefit because it is environmentally friendly and a cost saver! I bought these toilet tank bags in 2018 when I wanted to find a good way to start saving water (we have to pay for water every month) because I know that every flush is an exorbitant amount of water wasted. You’re literally flushing money down the toilet. I bought these tank bags, filled them with water, and placed them in the tank. That day, the amount of water expelled was significant which has reduced our water bill every month. And the best part is that they are holding up great even in the hard water. They are filled with water so they are reusable and conveniently clip to the side of the tank – never obstructing anything inside!

Though new to the house, this is something that I am not quite sure how I lived without! This is the Mealthy CrispLid for pressure cookers (like my instant pot). This is essentially an air fryer but without the need of buying an additional gadget. This allows us to enjoy our not so healthy foods in a much healthier way. We have already made “fried” chicken, french fries, tater tots, and a few other items! If you have an Instant Pot, or a pressure cooker of any kind, I highly recommend getting this!

I have these in BOTH of my crisper drawers and I am so glad I took the plunge to test these out. These are OXO Good Grips GreenSaver Standing Crisper Drawer Insert (2 Pack) and they are amazing little gadgets! So what are these? They are pyramid shaped containers that house enhanced carbon filters which absorb ethylene gas to keep produce fresh longer. And they really work! They will not keep the cucumber crisp for weeks but definitely a lot longer than without. In fact, I was able to get my lettuce to last 4 days longer having this than without them. And they are reusable so I have the filters auto-delivered every couple of months so I can keep my produce longer!

Back to that laundry conversation from earlier… If you ever do laundry at home and don’t want to throw that expensive sweater in the dryer or those jeans because if they shrink one more fraction of an inch, it’ll be WWIII when you try to put them on again…then you need this foldable laundry drying rack by Amazon Basics. It keeps my clothes from getting damaged in the dryer, reducing drying time, and folds up for easy storage!

I have two of these air purifiers by aer -one in each bedroom. They are compact, relatively noiseless and powerful. I even have the filters on auto-ship from Target because of the amount of dust and airborne particles. They have three speeds with the lowest being almost impossible to hear. The filters are easily replaceable and there is a date setting at the top to remind you when you changed and when you need to change the filters. These are great for small rooms, like a bedroom or office.

This compact steamer has been a staple in my home since late 2018 and is used often! I was honestly hesitant to get this because it is plastic but I needed to find an alternative for my husbands’ dress shirts as ironing was not cutting it. I also needed something to help me refresh garments that weren’t quite laundry mat material but not quite fresh either. So I took the plunge and bought this steamer for $25 and am so glad I did! This heats up quickly (within a minute) and the aluminum interior keeps the water hot the entire time you’re using it; the plastic exterior is easy to hold and doesn’t get hot. It even comes with a carrying case so you can take it with you when you travel because you know all those clothes are getting wrinkled in that suitcase!

Each of these products have helped us directly, or indirectly, start making our home a healthier place to live. I really am grateful that I had the opportunity to integrate these pieces into my home and have already purchased some of these several times over for gifts!

Amazon Favorites – June

Wait a second…it is already the second half of the year?! I swear that when I was a kid, in school, 180 days took FOREVER to come and go but now that I am an adult, I blink and it is already a year later. I cannot believe it is less than 150 days left till December 1st!

Okay, so since it is July, it is time for the monthly Amazon favorites for the month of June. Starting next month, this series will include non-Amazon favorites too and I’ll try to link them or find the closest match!

Disclaimer: Please note that these photos are the stock photo from Amazon; they are not mine. Also all links are affiliate and if you purchase the item through my link, I do receive a small profit but it does not change the price or experience for you!

Now on to the favorites!

I want to start off with a new skin tool that I have started to use in the past couple of weeks and will be posting about it in detail after using it for a month. This item, to date, has been showing me a lot of results on clearing my skin from discoloration, redness, sub-dermal breakouts, and overall texture. It is not for the faint of heart as it does cause breaking of the skin, but my derma roller has been great! It comes in sanitary packaging and does require you to clean it with rubbing alcohol before and after use, but it has helped my skin turnover faster, sloughing off dead skin cells and generating collagen. I highly recommend this derma roller to anyone that is starting out. It is only $19.99 and currently has a $2 off coupon through Amazon, plus it is prime!

So I finally did it. I broke my pizza cutter after making homemade, vegetarian pizza almost every week. So I scoured the depths of Amazon to find this cutter wheel and it has been amazing thus far! It easily packs up so you do not cut yourself when searching through your utensils and doesn’t require the strength of the Hulk to cut! It also comes apart completely so you can get a deep clean. It is only $10.99 and comes in three different colors – blue, green, and red.

There is nothing like fresh coffee in the morning. In fact, if I did not have my morning cups (yep, cups as in 2), the world is not safe! But what is even better is freshly grounded coffee that is even more rich and robust. Recently on a Costco trip, we purchased local coffee that was roasted but whole bean. Instead of grinding it at Costco for free, we got a small but highly effective grinder that grinds the perfect amount for one carafe worth of coffee so there isn’t excess that loses its flavor. This grinder only costs $19/97 AND there is currently a 5% off coupon. It can also be used to grind spices if you are so inclined and cleans up easily! It is a little noisy but only takes a few seconds to grind it all the way so it isn’t too obtrusive.

If you get the occasional breakout, especially if you are a woman around that time of the month, then this product will be a life saver for you too! I bought this 24 pack of acne patches that are spot treatments for overnight use. They are a little thick but once you put it on, you can barely see anything at all. They work through various oils including tea tree, calendula and rosehip to pull out the bacteria and dirt and reduce the breakout! Because it is a hydrocolloid patch, it works without over drying your skin and easily peels off int he morning. And even I, a completely wild sleeper, have not taken one off during the night so I know it’ll work for you too! It is only $7.50 for 24 patches and comes in a resealable package so you do not have to use them all at once! There is also an AM version that is thinner and even more discreet if you need to wear a patch during the day.

Even if you shop organic, you should ALWAYS wash your fruits and vegetables. Between packing, shipping, and shelving, even the most green products can interact with chemicals and dirt which could have harmful reactions. This is part of the reason why I never eat a grape out of the bag and always wash my produce with white vinegar and water even IF the packaging says it has been washed. So to help with some of those harder produce items like potatoes, peaches, apples, and so on, I have this vegetable brush. It is soft enough that it doesn’t damage the item but strong enough that with a little soap, it really cleans up the produce. And for $5.99, I make sure to replace this every 3 months to prevent bacterial build-up. It is ergonomic too so it fits nicely in any hand size.

In keeping up with keeping everything clean, I recently re-purchased bottle cleaning brushes for all of those odd shaped bottles we now use. For example, our Ninja coffee carafe cannot easily be cleaned with a sponge nor can our 40oz water bottles we use for the gym. So we purchased this brush set, for only $11.98 (plus a current coupon for $2.00 off), really helps clean even the smallest crevice in the weirdest shaped bottle. We also replace these every few months, but they really last even with our daily use and our hard water! I would really recommend purchasing this set if you have any of those reusable straws or oblong bottles!

Last but not least for June is another re-purchase and another skin care item! Some of you know that being Armenian means that well, being hairy is common! But that doesn’t mean that I have to like it. I use these facial razors for derma-planing or facial shaving. No, this is not like my husband’s razor and NO the hair does not grow back thicker or darker. In fact, the hair has been growing back less frequently and in smaller patches. I will do a video on how I derma-plane but this set is only $4.80 for 6 and since I throw these out monthly so as to not incur a build-up of bacteria, it is a great deal.

I have also recently subscribed to Amazon’s new Prime Wardrobe program and will be doing a test of the items they have sent and how on point my stylist was with my wishes. Stay tuned for an update next week!

Have you tried any of these products or will you be?? If you would like to see any of these items in action, please let me know. I am working on creating my schedule for videos and want to know what you want to see! Also if there are any items you think I should give a try, comment below!
